Tragic case out of Marion County, Florida: 26-year-old Jennifer Kendrick faces two felony child neglect charges for failing to protect her 3-year-old daughter Paisley Brown, beaten to death on Feb. 19 by her boyfriend Jeroen Coombs while Kendrick got her nails done.
The Incident
Paisley was left home with Coombs (32), who was alone with her and four other kids (ages 1, 4, 6, 9). He FaceTimed Kendrick around 10:58 a.m. saying Paisley was unresponsive—pale, limp, eyes barely open. Instead of rushing home or calling 911, she finished her manicure, called Coombs and her mom en route, arriving to find Paisley limp in a high chair. Coombs finally dialed 911 ~40 minutes later; Paisley died at hospital despite paramedics’ efforts.
Abuse Details and Confessions
- Coombs admitted binding Paisley’s hands (robe tie) and feet (painter’s tape) overnight to stop her reaching into her diaper, then dropping her, punching/hitting her chest 3x (“popped” her, “took it too far”), causing fatal injuries. Bruises, ligature marks on wrists/ankles, chest/private areas noted.
- Kendrick confessed post-Miranda she knew of prior abuse (restraining Paisley, handcuffing/beating others), overlooked it “for the relationship,” noted kids’ weight loss from Coombs’ strict eating rules. She removed handcuffs from another child before cops arrived.
- Sibling witnesses confirmed repeated assaults; great-aunt Tabitha Harless (trailer owner) did CPR, heard child say Coombs “punched her in the chest and…wall,” called out system failures.
Coombs upgraded to murder + prior aggravated child abuse; both held without bond. Kendrick also violated felony probation. Heart-wrenching how abuse “slipped through cracks”—kids showed clear signs. What’s your view on parental accountability here?
