What Happened
The couple punished Pearlene for texting teen boys by forcing her into exhausting exercises in the hot sun, then beating her for hours with a wooden plank and belt—while her sisters watched. She collapsed and died in a makeshift, unpowered bathroom in their trailer. They told the sisters to lie to paramedics and police.
Convictions
- Elias: Second-degree murder, torture, child abuse, and two counts of dissuading a witness.
- Gibbs: Second-degree murder, torture, child abuse (plus enhancements for great bodily injury and weapon use).
DA Nathan J. Hochman called it an “unthinkable betrayal,” noting no sentence can undo the loss.
