A Texas man has been detained following a shooting at his ex-girlfriend’s home that killed the woman’s partner.

Officers responding to an early morning shooting in a Converse, Texas residence on Sunday, October 26 discovered Noel Denzel Miller with several gunshot wounds, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement this week.

Miller, 35, was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Later that day, police arrested Shiateek Wilson, 23, in connection with the incident.

Wilson allegedly told investigators that he went to his ex-girlfriend’s residence around 1 a.m. and hid flowers in her daughter’s closet to surprise her, according to a sheriff’s office statement. According to the statement, while waiting for her to return home, he drank a beverage and watched movies.

According to an arrest affidavit reported by KSAT, the woman, whose name has not been made public, informed authorities that shortly after returning home with Miller, the two decided to take a shower together. According to the affidavit, while waiting in the shower for Miller, she heard gunshots and raced to her son’s upstairs bedroom, where she saw a wounded Miller.

She stated Wilson was also present and had a firearm, according to the sheriff’s office statement.

She alleged Wilson temporarily held onto her phone, preventing her from phoning 911 despite her pleas, according to KSAT, citing the affidavit.

Wilson then allegedly fled the scene, according to the sheriff’s office, before being arrested later that day.

Miller’s family and friends are mourning his death.

“The hood is gonna feel this one,” Nathan Devon Liggins wrote on Facebook. “Noel Miller brought joy to a lot of people it’s sad to see his story end so soon RIP my friend.”

“A piece of my heart was just ripped away,” read another post by Wendell Monroe. “…having to tell this to my mom, dad and lil brother ended me: Rest in Heaven Noel; I’ll love you forever my baby and keep your name alive.”

Another family member said on social media that they are raising donations to lay him to rest.

Wilson, who the sheriff’s office claims admitted to shooting the victim “claiming self-defense,” has been charged with murder, according to online court records obtained by PEOPLE.

He is awaiting indictment and is being jailed on a $300,000 bond. A lawyer listed for Wilson in court documents did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
