Kentucky Sheriff Arrested for Third DUI While Driving 110 MPH Tells Officer He's 'Not That Drunk'

Following his third DUI arrest in less than two years, Kentucky’s governor gave a clear message to Robertson County Sheriff Terry Gray this week: resign or be fired.

Gray, 48, was detained again on Tuesday night after being pulled over for driving recklessly at speeds of up to 110 mph while flashing blue police lights and sirens, according to The Courier-Journal, Lex 18, and WKYT.

According to Lex 18, the sheriff, who was supposedly last arrested for DUI in 2023, was wearing his sheriff’s uniform when he was apprehended on Tuesday. According to an arrest citation obtained by Lex 18 and The Courier-Journal, Gray nearly flipped his car twice and crossed the center median line on the road several times while being pursued by another local sheriff, Mason County Sheriff Ryan Swolsky, with whom Gray initially sped past and nearly collided, prompting the chase.

Swolsky stated in the citation that when Gray finally came to a halt, he could “immediately” smell alcohol coming from the vehicle, according to Lex 18. When questioned by the Mason County sheriff, Gray assured Swolsky that he was “not that drunk.” According to Lex 18, the arrest complaint states that a tiny bottle of Fireball whisky was found on the passenger seat next to Gray.

Gray allegedly told Swolsky that he was pursuing another vehicle, which he “lost” during the chase, according to The Courier-Journal.

PEOPLE contacted Gray for comment, but did not receive a response by Thursday.

According to local jail records, Gray was still in custody at the Mason County Detention Center on Thursday afternoon on accusations of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, reckless driving, first-degree wanton endangerment, and first-degree official misconduct. Gray’s bond is set at $500,000.

Gray’s court appearance is scheduled for October 13, according to documents.

The beleaguered sheriff was previously arrested for drunk driving in 2023 and 2024, but both times he avoided jail time, according to Lex 18.

Following Gray’s arrest on Tuesday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s general counsel S. Travis Mayo sent him a letter demanding that he resign within five business days or face termination, according to The Courier-Journal.

“We value the sanctity of law enforcement and the duty to uphold the law and serve and protect the communities that put their trust in their peace officers,” the governor’s letter said.

Gray’s detention triggered resignation calls from other local law enforcement officers, including Swolsky, who arrested the sheriff on Tuesday.

“At the end of the day he needs to resign because he tarnished the badge,” Swolsky told the news station. “I believe I speak on behalf of police enforcement across the state. We police ourselves. “His behavior is unacceptable.”
