Just Shoot Me: A woman accused of setting fire to her former roommate, who had dated her boyfriend, is charged

Taylor Renee Roediger, 40, of Arizona, has been charged with second‑degree murder in the shooting death of her former roommate, Jessica Yard, after a late‑night argument that escalated when Yard showed up at Roediger’s home and entered the house with Roediger’s boyfriend—Yard’s ex.

What led to the shooting

According to the probable‑cause statement, Yard arrived around 12:30 a.m. on March 30 while visibly inebriated, saying she wanted to speak with her ex‑boyfriend and try to “rekindle their relationship.” Roediger, watching via a bedroom security monitor, saw the two talking in the front yard, went to the door, and a verbal altercation followed. She initially left the home, assuming her boyfriend would make Yard leave.

When Roediger came back, she found Yard naked in the kitchen with her boyfriend. A confrontation followed, during which the complaint says Yard propositioned Roediger to “engage in sexual acts with them.” Roediger refused, left the house, then returned to find the argument re‑erupting. She claims Yard tried to strike her and damaged property, and says both Yard and her boyfriend followed her into the bedroom, saying they were going to “beat” her up.

How the gun was used

Roediger says she grabbed a gun, threatened to shoot herself if they did not leave, and repeatedly told Yard to exit the home. The statement says Yard then yelled at her, “Just shoot me.” Roediger, thinking Yard was standing by the washer and dryer, fired at the wall shared with the bathroom and struck Yard in the upper body, intending only to “end the interaction” and scare them away. Police say Yard later died from the wound.

After the shooting, Roediger allegedly panicked, fled the scene, and buried the gun in a neighbor’s planter box. A court hearing is scheduled for April 6; it is not yet clear if she has entered a plea or hired an attorney.
