A pregnant Oregon mother and her 2-year-old son were involved in a violent incident on Sunday afternoon at Rockaway Beach, which escalated quickly after a Jeep Patriot struck the woman in a parking lot.
The situation turned even more dangerous when her husband confronted the driver, leading to a stabbing by a passenger in the vehicle.
What Happened?
According to Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, a pregnant woman carrying her 2-year-old son, was struck by a silver Jeep Patriot in the Rockaway Beach Wayside parking lot around 1 p.m.
The driver of the Jeep stopped after hitting the woman, and her husband confronted the driver about the accident.
At that moment, Izac Rutledge, a 25-year-old passenger in the Jeep, exited the vehicle and stabbed the husband in the back with a weapon. The altercation then escalated as the Jeep fled the scene with Rutledge still in the vehicle.
Police Response and Rutledge’s Arrest
After the stabbing, Rutledge ran on foot, attempting to evade authorities. The female driver of the Jeep, however, returned to the parking lot on foot after driving a few blocks. She cooperated with the Tillamook County Sheriff’s deputies, providing vital information about the incident.
Rutledge was located soon after and arrested without further incident. Police later discovered that he had attempted to avoid detection by changing his clothing.
Victim’s Condition
The pregnant woman and her 2-year-old son both sustained undisclosed injuries but are expected to recover. The husband was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a stab wound and is also expected to recover. Fortunately, the injuries did not result in more serious harm.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Rutledge has been charged with first-degree assault, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to be arraigned on April 3, 2026.
Sheriff Josh Brown commended the swift response of the deputies and expressed gratitude for the assistance from citizens who provided information during the incident.
He emphasized that the situation had the potential for far worse injuries, but thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, the consequences were less severe.
