A tragic incident in Washington has left two people dead and raised serious concerns about domestic violence and safety measures.

What Happened

According to the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, 60-year-old Robert T. Child is accused of killing his wife, Anna Child, and her boyfriend, Jason Hilde, at a home in Hoodsport.

Authorities say the incident took place on Tuesday evening when the suspect entered the home and used a shotgun to shoot both victims. After the attack, he reportedly fled the scene in his vehicle.

Background of the Case

Just a day before the incident, Anna Child had been granted a protection order by a local court. She had expressed fear for her safety, stating that her husband had threatened her and that she did not feel safe around him.

The court order required Robert Child to stay at least 250 feet away from her. The couple was also going through a divorce at the time.

However, officials later revealed that the protection order had not yet been formally served to the suspect when the incident occurred.

Witness Account and Police Response

A nearby resident reported hearing gunshots and called emergency services. The neighbor also encountered the suspect shortly after the incident. When law enforcement arrived, they found both victims with fatal gunshot wounds inside the house, along with a shotgun and spent shells.

Police launched a search operation and later arrested Robert Child the following day. He is now facing two counts of first-degree murder and burglary and is being held in the Mason County Jail.

Investigation and Concerns

Authorities are continuing to investigate the case. The sheriff has also ordered a review to determine whether anything could have been done differently to prevent the tragedy, especially regarding the timing of serving the protection order.

This case has highlighted the challenges in handling domestic violence situations and the importance of timely enforcement of protective measures.
