Ian Huntley, who was convicted of murdering two pre-teen school girls over two decades ago, dies after a prison attack.

Ian Huntley, the 52-year-old convicted of the 2002 Soham murders of 10-year-old girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, died on March 7 after a prison attack on February 26 at HMP Frankland in Durham, England.

Attack Details

Huntley suffered severe brain trauma from an inmate wielding a metal bar in the prison workshop, leaving him in a pool of blood. Placed on life support, his condition deteriorated; support was withdrawn March 6, leading to his death the next day.

Original Crimes

Huntley lured the girls from a family barbecue to buy sweets, killed them at his home, and dumped their bodies in a Suffolk ditch 10 miles away. Convicted in 2003, he received two life sentences with a 40-year minimum tariff.

Prison History and Probe

Huntley faced prior attacks, including a 2010 throat slashing and 2005 boiling water assault. Convicted killer Anthony Russell, 43, is suspected; Durham Constabulary’s investigation continues, preparing a file for the Crown Prosecution Service.
