Tia Holmes, a 38-year-old woman from Anderson, Indiana, faces charges for fatally shooting her 17-year-old daughter, Tianna Harris, during an early morning incident on December 28, 2025. Authorities allege Holmes mistook her daughter for an intruder amid paranoia about her ex-husband, grabbing a handgun kept under a mattress to sweep the home on West 38th Street.

Incident Circumstances

Holmes reportedly heard a noise, saw a shadow, and fired a single shot around 5 a.m., later realizing her error after hearing a grunt and turning on the light. Witnesses, including a sibling, described Holmes’ habit of seeing shadows and arming herself to investigate, with one sibling bluntly stating she killed Tianna because “she doesn’t know how to sit down and chill.” Another witness recalled urging Holmes to calm down before sleeping, only to wake to the gunshot and find Harris wounded; Holmes allegedly said, “Oh my god, I didn’t know it was her; I thought he was trying to get in here.”

Charges and Status

Holmes faces preliminary felony counts of reckless homicide, neglect of a dependent (Level 3), and neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury (Level 6). She remains in Madison County Jail on a $250,000 bond as of early January 2026, following her release from a crisis stabilization center.
