Clifford Long, 37, of Florida, has been indicted for first‑degree murder in the August 29, 2025, shooting that killed 2‑year‑old Bles’Syn Lightner and wounded her grandparents in Melbourne. According to a probable‑cause affidavit, police responded to a home in the 900 block of Poplar Lane around 10:40 p.m. and found the grandparents with gunshot wounds. The little girl was discovered in a bedroom with a fatal head wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
What police say happened
- Survivors initially denied knowing the shooter, but in later interviews the male victim identified Long, known as “Goof,” as the gunman. He described Long as a tall, thin, light‑skinned Black man with a head shaped like a football, matching Long’s appearance.
- The affidavit states that Long allegedly shot Bles’Syn in the forehead, then stepped over her body and opened fire on the grandparents. Four other adults and two more children were present but were not injured.
Possible motive and later violence
- Long is said to have told his brother he killed the girl because “they wouldn’t come off that money,” suggesting a possible robbery or drug‑related motive, and he claimed he didn’t mean to kill her.
- About a week later, Long and his brother allegedly stabbed a homeless man more than 30 times and hacked off his finger with a machete in another drug‑related dispute.
When questioned about Bles’Syn’s murder, Long denied involvement, saying he was at a gas station at the time and only “heard about what happened,” adding, “I didn’t shed a tear but my condolences to the family.” He has been held in the Brevard County Jail without bond since September 2025, first in connection with the machete attack, and will next appear in court on May 20, 2026, for the murder and attempted‑murder charges tied to the Poplar Lane shooting.
