Lenexa, Kansas – Todd Donovan, 54, has been sentenced to a “Hard 50” prison term after pleading guilty to the first-degree murders of his wife, Sheila Donovan, 52, and their adult son, Tyler Donovan, 22, as well as cruelty to animals for the killing of a neighbor’s dog. The sentence ensures that Donovan will serve 50 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
The Tragic Incident
The charges stem from a violent spree that unfolded on November 1, 2023. At approximately 8:20 p.m., the Lenexa Police Department responded to an armed disturbance call at the Donovan home located in the 7900 block of Hallet Street. Officers arrived to the sound of multiple gunshots coming from the residence.
A negotiation with Donovan began, but he refused to comply with officers’ requests to come outside. After several hours of back-and-forth communication, Donovan ceased responding to negotiators, prompting the deployment of a specialized unit to force entry into the home around 1:50 a.m., over five hours later.
Once inside, police discovered the bodies of Sheila Donovan and Tyler Donovan, both dead from gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene. In addition, officers learned that a neighbor’s dog had also been shot and killed during the same time frame.
Details of the Incident
Court documents revealed more chilling details about the incident. Before ceasing communication, Donovan had reportedly walked out of his house with his hands raised and tossed a rifle from his garage. He later went back into the house to take Ambien pills, claiming they helped him “calm down.” Afterward, he stopped speaking with law enforcement, but his phone remained on, and authorities could hear him snoring in the background.
During the standoff, Donovan allegedly called his brother, Aaron Miller, and confessed, saying, “I just shot my family. They thought I was sleeping. I could hear them laughing and making fun of me, so I shot them.” Donovan also reportedly entered a neighbor’s home and shot their dog.
Donovan’s mental state seemed to deteriorate as the negotiation continued. He is quoted as saying, “I just want to die,” and “Come and get me. I’m armed to the teeth but I’m not gonna shoot.” In addition, he referred to his family as “a couple of traitors,” expressing disbelief over his family’s alleged actions towards him.

Todd Donovan was sentenced under the Kansas “Hard 50” law, which mandates a minimum of 50 years in prison for defendants convicted of premeditated first-degree murder after July 1, 2014. This sentence will be served before Donovan is eligible for parole.
