A Durham judge has sentenced Stephon Dubose, 32, to between 35 and 44 years in prison for the 2023 shooting death of Angela Marina Risi and the attempted murder of her roommate.
Dubose pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and attempted murder for the Oct. 2, 2023 shooting at a home on Worth Street in Durham, North Carolina. He was credited for more than two years already served in jail.
Shooting Followed Argument Over Relationship
According to court records and statements from Risi’s family, Dubose and Risi had argued about the future of their relationship shortly before the shooting. Her father said Dubose wanted an exclusive relationship, while Risi did not.
Authorities said Dubose forced his way into the home after Risi left his car and went inside. He allegedly fired multiple rounds, striking Risi eight times. He then entered a bedroom and shot her roommate three times. The roommate survived but now walks with a cane due to her injuries.
Police later responded to a separate call at a residence on Tranquil Road, where Dubose had reportedly begun stabbing himself. Officers disarmed him, and he allegedly admitted to shooting a woman and said he did not want to return to prison.
Family Remembers Risi’s Life and Legacy
Risi’s sentencing hearing took place on what would have been her 33rd birthday. Her family traveled from California to attend. Her father described her as compassionate and deeply committed to helping others.
Risi was a second-year graduate student in the dance program at Duke University. University officials expressed shock and sadness following her death. Community members and loved ones remembered her as bright, talented and passionate about dance, a pursuit she began in childhood.
