During a home invasion, an ill mother hid in a closet with her baby and fatally shot one intruder

JOLIET, Illinois – A late-night home invasion turned deadly last Friday when a mother shot and killed an intruder who broke into her home while she was inside with her baby.

Intruder Armed With a Screwdriver

According to the Joliet Police Department, the woman did not know the man, who forced his way inside wearing gloves and holding a screwdriver. Officers responding to a 911 call found signs of forced entry at the home.

When police entered, they discovered the man lying on the second floor with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The woman was in a nearby bedroom with her baby and the firearm when officers arrived.

Mother Hid in Closet Before Firing

Investigators say the woman took cover after realizing someone had broken into the home.

“A preliminary investigation indicates the victim and her child hid in a bedroom closet, and she armed herself after hearing someone forcibly enter the home,” police said.

When the intruder entered the bedroom, the woman fired her handgun once, striking him in the head.

Death Ruled at the Scene

The Will County Coroner’s Office pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released publicly, pending further examination and notification of family.

Case Still Under Investigation

Police confirmed that the woman is cooperating fully with detectives, and the case remains under active investigation. The coroner’s office will determine the intruder’s identity and official cause of death.

No charges have been filed against the homeowner at this time, and no additional injuries were reported.

This case highlights how quickly a routine night can turn into a life-or-death situation. For now, investigators continue piecing together details while the mother and her baby are safe.
