Dragging him on the pavement: Son attacked and choked his father for telling a friend he was his father, police allege

Miguel Gomez Jr., 32, of Memphis, Tennessee, has been charged with aggravated assault by strangulation and domestic assault following an incident on August 10, where he allegedly assaulted his father, Miguel Gomez Sr., after a family disagreement. The altercation occurred at the elder Gomez’s home on Randy Cove in Memphis.

Disagreement Escalates

The conflict began when Miguel Gomez Jr. asked his father if he had told one of his friends that he was his son. When Gomez Sr. confirmed that he had, the younger man reportedly became angry. The court affidavit states that Gomez Jr. then punched his father in the mouth with a closed fist, prompting the elder Gomez to run outside in an attempt to escape.

Escalating Violence

However, the attack did not stop there. Gomez Jr. reportedly caught up with his father outside and struck him again. He then allegedly slammed his father to the ground and dragged him along the pavement. The assault continued when Gomez Jr. allegedly wrapped his arm around his father’s neck and squeezed, choking him until he could no longer breathe.

Intervention from a Witness

At this point, a witness identified only as “Gonzalo” was driving by and saw the attack. The witness shouted at Gomez Jr., causing him to briefly release his grip on his father. Taking advantage of the moment, Gomez Sr. reportedly bit his son near the chest, which allowed him to break free. He then ran to his truck and drove to a nearby police station.

Injuries and Arrest

Gomez Sr. arrived at the station with cuts on his mouth, an abrasion on his arm, and swelling to his head. He identified his son as the attacker. Following the incident, Miguel Gomez Jr. was arrested and booked into the Shelby County Jail on August 17. His bond was set at $200,000.

Court Appearance

Gomez Jr. appeared in court for a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, where a judge granted the state’s motion to revoke his bond. The case remains under investigation as Gomez Jr. faces serious charges for his actions.
