Five teenagers have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 57-year-old Kevin Cooper, a minister who was killed while shielding his 4-year-old granddaughter. The suspects, including Zyaire E. Carter, 19, and Ty’Davion C. Burton, 18, are charged with first-degree murder, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and other offenses. Jayden J. Sarinana, Jordan Perkins, and a 17-year-old face similar charges, including second-degree murder and burglary.
Break-In and Shooting Incident
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 1, 2023, at Cooper’s home on Southeast Ramona Street in Portland. Authorities say the suspects forcibly entered Cooper’s residence, identifying themselves as police officers before breaking through the door. Cooper was shot multiple times while attempting to protect his granddaughter. He was rushed to the hospital but died a month later from his injuries.
Legal Proceedings and Community Reactions
The suspects were arrested in a series of investigations, with Carter and Burton initially detained on unrelated charges. Sarinana and the juvenile were apprehended in January on robbery charges. A grand jury indicted the four adults for murder, and Perkins was arrested earlier this month. The case has drawn strong reactions from the community, with Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer emphasizing the need for justice and accountability.
Cooper, a beloved figure in the local church community, had been a minister at HeavenBound Deliverance Center Church, now known as People of Purpose Family Worship Center. His obituary highlights his love for fishing and playing dominoes, noting his playful spirit and devotion to his family and church. The suspects are scheduled to appear in court on March 5.
