Steve Jahn, 44, from Pennsylvania, faces first-degree murder charges for the fatal shooting of Megan Nieberle, a Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia nurse, in what authorities describe as a random act of violence in Tredyffrin Township.
Incident Timeline
On Saturday evening, March 7, 2026, police conducted a welfare check on Jahn around 8:30 p.m. outside a bank after reports of his frantic behavior and paranoia about being followed; he carried a 9mm handgun but declined hospital evaluation without an escort, then left after arriving. About two hours later, around 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a crash on Contention Lane where Nieberle was found shot in the head inside her car and later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Investigation and Arrest
Neighbors reported a screaming man and gunshots nearby; license plate readers placed Jahn’s vehicle in the area. Hours later, he was found at a relative’s home with his gun and car dashcam, which captured him ripping it down while armed and muttering threats during the welfare check. In custody, Jahn made incriminating statements like “I pulled the trigger at the car” and questioned why he was jailed, per the affidavit.
Victim and Suspect Background
Nieberle had no connection to Jahn; her family is grieving the sudden loss. Friends told media Jahn had spiraled after stopping medication, amid drug and alcohol issues. He remains in Chester County Jail without bond, with a court date on March 23; prosecutors from Chester County DA Chris de Barrena-Sarobe’s office emphasize the randomness of the tragedy.
