A man currently in custody in the Bahamas following his wife’s disappearance had previously faced child abuse allegations more than two decades ago, a case that ended in acquittal.
Wife’s Disappearance Under Investigation
Brian Hooker is being held by authorities in the Bahamas after his wife, Lynette, reportedly fell overboard while the two were on a dinghy.
Officials say he has not been charged with a crime in connection with her disappearance, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
Before his arrest, Hooker stated on social media that “unpredictable seas and high winds” caused his wife to fall from the boat.
Past Allegations in Michigan
Court records show Hooker was previously accused in a 2005 case in Michigan involving allegations that he choked a child in his home.
According to police reports, the incident occurred during a visit from his children, during which a dispute arose related to their homeschooling and instruction in creationism.
A forensic report noted that a responding officer observed light red marks on the child’s neck that were consistent with the allegations.
Acquittal in Earlier Case
Despite the accusations, Hooker was acquitted of the child abuse charges by a jury.
His current attorney, Terrel A. Butler, has declined to comment directly on the earlier case but has emphasized that past allegations do not determine what occurred in the current situation.
Defense Response
Following Hooker’s arrest, Butler stated that her client “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing.”
She also noted that prior claims of abuse or a troubled relationship do not establish responsibility in the present case.
