A automobile plowed into pedestrians in Florida, killing at least four people and injuring 11 others.
The truck smashed into a store in Ybor, a Tampa neighborhood, early Saturday, Nov. 8, striking more than a dozen persons who were outdoors, according to a news release from the Tampa Police Department (TPD).
“At around 12:40 a.m., the TPD Air Service was monitoring a vehicle driving dangerously on Interstate 275. The driver continued to drive dangerously at high speeds until exiting the interstate at Doyle Carlton Drive, according to the TPD.
According to officials, the driver eventually “lost control” of the vehicle and smashed into a storefront, injuring many passersby.
Prior to the incident, the same vehicle was seen street racing in another neighboring location, according to authorities.
The incident affected 15 people in all. According to authorities, three of the victims died at the site, while a fourth died in the hospital.
One injured victim is currently in serious condition, while eight others are stable in the hospital. The TPD reported that two more victims suffered minor injuries as a result of the event.
Silas Sampson, 22, was seized at the site after being identified as the suspected driver by police.
According to the TPD, the Florida Highway Patrol is currently heading the investigation into the crash.
TPD Chief Lee Bercaw described the incident as a “senseless tragedy.”
“Our hearts go out to the victims’ families and all those affected,” he stated in a statement. “Reckless driving endangered innocent lives. “The Tampa Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol are dedicated to seeking justice for the victims and their families.”
