A man has been found guilty of murdering his two-week-old baby boy in a heartbreaking case that has shocked people across the UK. The incident took place in March 2024 at a hospital in Yeovil, located in southwestern England.
Baby Brendon Was Just Two Weeks Old
The infant, Brendon Staddon, was born premature at 33 weeks and had been in the hospital’s newborn care unit when the tragedy happened. His father, 27-year-old Daniel Gunter, was found guilty of murder after days of physically abusing his baby. Brendon’s mother, Sophie Staddon, who is 21 years old, was cleared of charges related to causing or allowing his death.
Severe Injuries Discovered
According to a post-mortem report, baby Brendon died from a blunt force head injury. Medical staff said the baby’s body showed signs of terrible harm. He had a fractured skull, a broken neck, broken legs, arms, jaw, and wrists. The lead investigator told the court that “there wasn’t any part of his body that wasn’t injured.”
Concerns Raised Before the Death
During the trial at Bristol Crown Court, it was revealed that hospital staff had already raised concerns about Gunter. Nurses noticed that he was rough with the baby, often removing him from the incubator even when told not to. On one occasion, he was also suspected of removing Brendon’s nasal feeding tube.
The Day of the Tragedy
In the early hours of March 5, 2024, the baby’s mother alerted nurses that Brendon was “cold.” But when nurses checked, they saw that he had suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. While doctors and nurses tried to save the baby, both Gunter and Staddon reportedly left the ward to smoke outside.
Prosecutors also shared that after his arrest, Gunter seemed more worried about his vape being taken away than the condition of his baby.

Following the guilty verdict, Brendon’s grandfather, Simon Gunter, shared his pain. He said the family was robbed of memories with Brendon. “We won’t get to see his first steps, hear his first words, or watch him grow,” he said.
