A 13-year-old girl in Texas bit a guy to get away after he “grabbed her from behind” in a suspected kidnapping scheme, police said.
On Monday, Oct. 27, at approximately 6:58 a.m. local time, Galveston Police Department officers responded to the city’s Central Middle School after receiving reports from the school that a student “had been approached and grabbed by an unknown man” on her way there, according to a press release shared on Facebook.
According to the statement, the youngster was walking to school from her family’s East End apartment when “she heard footsteps approaching from behind, near the 900 block of 28th Street,” according to police.
The girl bit the suspect twice and, fortunately, escaped.
Police stated, “The student reported that a man grabbed her from behind. After a brief battle in which the young girl bit the perpetrator twice, she managed to escape and go straight to Central Middle School.”
“The victim did not sustain any physical injuries during the incident,” the press release claimed. It continued: “Teachers at the school contacted police after hearing the student’s account.”
Police stated they had sent out an alert to local medical facilities “to notify [them] if anyone sought treatment for bite-related injuries.”
The student’s parents visited their daughter’s school and “accompanied officers back to their apartment and retraced the student’s route to identify where the incident occurred,” according to the post.
Officers then discovered surveillance camera footage from a company in the 1000 block of 24th Street, which showed the student strolling through the area before being followed shortly thereafter by a male on the same path.
According to police: “The suspect appears to be a White or Hispanic male wearing a black short-sleeve shirt, blue jeans and what appeared to be a ski mask.”
Police are appealing the public for aid in identifying the culprit and urging anyone with knowledge to come forward.
PEOPLE contacted the Galveston Police Department for more information, but they did not answer immediately.
