On a summer afternoon in 1981, Adam Walsh was at a Sears department store in Hollywood, Florida, with his mother, Revé. She left him in the toy section while she went to look at lamps. When she returned, Adam was gone. A security guard had reportedly asked a group of boys to leave the store, mistakenly thinking Adam was with them. This may have left Adam outside alone.
Despite a search and police involvement, Adam could not be found. Two weeks later, while John and Revé were in New York to appear on Good Morning America, they received devastating news: Adam’s severed head had been discovered in a drainage canal 120 miles away, in Vero Beach. His body was never recovered.

The case remained unsolved for decades. Serial killer Ottis Toole confessed to Adam’s murder but later changed his story, causing confusion. Although Toole died in prison in 1996, police officially closed the case in 2008, stating they believed Toole was responsible.
John and Revé never stopped believing that Toole had killed their son. But for years, they endured pain, frustration, and a sense that authorities had failed them. There were even suggestions years later that another serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer, may have been involved, but that was never proven.
