In a shocking and heartbreaking incident, a 76-year-old Illinois man has been accused of killing his daughter-in-law execution-style during a family wedding in Schaumburg, a northwest suburb of Chicago. The shooting took place in the parking lot of a Marriott hotel on Friday night, leaving the entire community stunned.
What Happened?
According to local police, Roland Schmidt allegedly followed Christine Moyer, 45, outside the wedding venue and shot her in the head while she was speaking with another family member. The horrifying act was witnessed by multiple guests, including relatives.
Moyer was rushed to a local hospital but sadly died from her injuries.
Why Did It Happen?
Investigators say the motive behind the killing was tied to Moyer’s plans to divorce Schmidt’s son. Reports from ABC 7 Chicago say Schmidt was “angry and upset” after learning, weeks before the wedding, that his daughter-in-law had filed for divorce from his son. Prosecutors claim Schmidt admitted to planning the shooting in advance.
“Execution-Style” Shooting Confirmed by Prosecutors
During court proceedings, prosecutors described the act as an “execution-style” killing, stating that Schmidt shot Moyer in the head at close range. He was quickly subdued at the scene by a bystander and handed over to police.
Expired Gun License Raises Questions
According to NBC 5 Chicago, Schmidt was found to have an expired FOID card. In Illinois, a Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card is legally required to own or possess guns or ammunition. Schmidt should not have been in possession of a firearm at the time of the incident.
Court Appearance and Legal Status
Schmidt appeared in court on Monday, where a judge ruled that he will remain in custody without bail until his next court hearing on August 22. His public defender argued that due to his age and health problems, he should be released, but the judge denied the request.
Victim Remembered as Mother of Two
Christine Moyer leaves behind two children, and her death has left family and friends grieving deeply. Two people who claimed to know Schmidt were present in court and said simply, “Pray for her children.”
This tragedy highlights the devastating consequences of domestic conflict turned violent. A family celebration became the scene of unthinkable loss, all rooted in unresolved anger over a divorce. As legal proceedings continue, many in the community are mourning a mother, daughter-in-law, and friend whose life ended far too soon.
