DeKalb County, Ga. – A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Wiley, who died in a fire at her apartment on Monday, Sept. 1. Authorities have charged Shawn Fails with murder, aggravated assault, and arson after the fire, which was determined to have been intentionally set.
Tragic Fire Claims Stephanie Wiley’s Life
Stephanie Wiley, 48, was killed in the blaze that engulfed her DeKalb County apartment in the early morning hours of Sept. 1. Wiley’s son, who was reportedly in the unit with her at the time, survived the fire by jumping out of a window. He sustained broken pelvis injuries from the fall and is now recovering.
When first responders arrived, they found Wiley unresponsive, suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
The Arrest of Shawn Fails
Investigators quickly determined that the fire had been set intentionally. Authorities arrested Shawn Fails, Wiley’s ex-boyfriend, later that same day in Lanett, Alabama, during a traffic stop. Fails is currently facing charges of murder, aggravated assault, and arson in connection with Wiley’s death.
The arrest follows a Ring camera video shared by a neighbor, which allegedly shows a man in white clothing setting the fire outside the apartment before running away as the flames quickly spread. In the footage, the neighbor described hearing Wiley’s screams and seeing her hand in the window before the noise stopped.
While DeKalb County investigators have not confirmed if the footage was used to identify Fails, it played a role in the investigation. The neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, told FOX 5: “I could hear her screaming and howling for her life.”
Remembering Stephanie Wiley
In a GoFundMe set up to help with Wiley’s funeral costs, her loved ones remembered her as a kind, loving person with a huge heart. “She was the most beautiful, loving, big-hearted person you will ever meet,” reads part of the fundraiser, adding that she was always there for people in need.
Wiley’s brother also shared on Facebook that her son’s bravery saved both their lives, jumping from the window to escape the flames. The family has expressed their devastation over the loss of Wiley and their gratitude for the support they are receiving during this difficult time.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Fails is being held in Lanett, Alabama, and is expected to be booked into DeKalb County Jail to face charges of murder, aggravated assault, and arson. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack, and the investigation is ongoing.
