The incident happened Feb. 17 in Wood County, as paramedics in Wisconsin Rapids were loading a patient into the vehicle. According to reports, 37-year-old Benjamin Feltz allegedly jumped into the driver’s seat and sped away despite paramedics’ attempts to stop him.
High-Speed Chase
Authorities say a police pursuit followed and lasted about 20 minutes before officers were able to stop the ambulance after one of its tires deflated.
During the chase, the patient reportedly yelled that she was dying from kidney disease in an effort to get Feltz to stop. Officials said she did not suffer physical injuries as a result of the incident.
Body camera footage later showed Feltz exiting the ambulance completely nude with his hands raised.
Charges and Court Proceedings
According to court records, Feltz has been charged with several felonies, including first-degree reckless endangerment, taking and driving a vehicle without consent, fleeing an officer, and threatening individuals involved in the legal system. He also faces six misdemeanor charges, including lewd behavior and indecent exposure.
Authorities said Feltz allegedly made threats toward officers while in custody.
At an initial court appearance Feb. 20, a judge ordered a mental competency evaluation. Feltz is currently being held on a $100,000 bond, and a hearing date has not yet been scheduled.
