A missing woman who went paddleboarding in a Maine pond was found murdered

Crawford Pond, Maine – Authorities have confirmed that Sunshine Stewart, 48, who disappeared while paddleboarding on Crawford Pond in Maine’s Knox region on July 3, was murdered. Maine State Police announced this week that her death was a result of homicide, though they have not released the cause of death.

Disappearance and Search

Stewart, affectionately known as “Sunny” to friends and family, went paddleboarding alone on July 2 but never returned. Her disappearance prompted a search on the following day, during which police located her body under unusual circumstances. While specific details about the circumstances surrounding her body have not been disclosed, the medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy and determined that her death was a homicide.

Remembering Sunshine Stewart

Stewart is being remembered for her adventurous spirit and fierce energy. Friends have described her as one of the strongest people they ever met. In a Facebook tribute, her friend Rob Wood recalled Stewart’s ability to face challenges with a smile and overcome them with determination: “She reminded us that we are alive,” he said.

Her sister, Kim Ware, described Stewart as a marine biologist, and fondly noted that she was the “world’s best bartender, lobsterman, and boat captain.” Friends like Stacey Yandell spoke of Stewart’s self-sufficiency, describing her as a “strong, self-made woman” who could master any skill or trade. Yandell even referred to her as her own version of HGTV, noting that she rebuilt her own house.

Investigation and Appeal for Information

As of now, no arrests have been made in the case. Maine State Police are asking for information from anyone who may have seen Stewart paddleboarding on Wednesday, July 2, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond. Police can be contacted at 207-624-7076.

Community Support

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist Stewart’s family and friends in giving her a proper farewell. The page describes her as a beloved individual with an “adventurous, vibrant spirit” who will be deeply missed.
