PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A deadly explosion rocked a residential block in Philadelphia early Sunday morning, killing one person and injuring two others. The blast, which occurred on the 1900 block of Bristol Street just before 5 a.m. local time on June 29, caused significant damage to multiple homes and has left the community in shock.
Emergency Response and Search Efforts
Upon receiving the explosion report, firefighters from the Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) responded swiftly to the scene. When they arrived, they found several homes collapsed and a small fire burning amid the rubble. First responders prioritized searching for injured or trapped individuals while working to extinguish the fire.
A canine unit was brought in to help locate victims, and tragically, the remains of one victim were found during these efforts.
The incident was deemed an “all-hands” emergency, meaning over 60 firefighters were on the scene, and additional equipment was required to handle the destruction and ongoing fire.
Destruction and Evacuations
The explosion and ensuing fire completely destroyed three row houses and caused severe damage to the surrounding area. In total, 10 homes were evacuated for safety reasons as crews worked to stabilize the area.
Authorities confirmed that two female victims were injured in the blast. One is currently in critical condition, while the other is listed as stable. Their identities have not been released, and both are receiving treatment at Temple University Hospital, according to ABC News.
Community Reaction
Neighborhood resident Rocky Dotson described the chaos he witnessed after hearing the explosion from his home. “I’m sitting down in the living room watching TV and all of a sudden, I hear like a boom,” Dotson told WPVI. “I came out, and it was just total chaos.”
Mayor’s Statement and Support for Victims
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed her deep sorrow for the tragedy, offering condolences to the victims and their families. In a statement shared on social media, Parker said, “One Philadelphian has died from her injuries. Two more individuals are being treated at Temple University Hospital. The victims — and every neighbor on Bristol Street and nearby — are in our prayers this evening.”
Parker also announced that those wishing to help the victims of the tragedy can donate to a relief fund for those affected.

Once the area is deemed safe, the Philadelphia Fire Marshall’s Office will investigate the cause of the explosion and fire. Fire officials are working diligently to clear the rubble and gather further information.
