A major manhunt is underway in Victoria, Australia, after two police officers were shot dead and another seriously injured during an incident in the rural town of Porepunkah on Tuesday, August 26. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is armed, dangerous, and still on the run.
What Happened in Porepunkah
According to Victoria Police, the shooting occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. local time when officers attended a property on Rayner Track. Around 10 police officers were present when gunfire broke out.
A 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable were fatally shot.
A third officer was shot in the lower body and remains in serious condition.
The other seven officers escaped physically unharmed but are reported to be deeply shaken.
Authorities say the officers had been at the property to execute a warrant for historical sex offences when the shooting unfolded.
The Suspect: Armed, Dangerous, and on the Run
Media outlets including the Herald Sun have identified the alleged shooter as Dezi Freeman, a local man in his 50s who has previously described himself as a “sovereign citizen.”
Police say he is “heavily armed” and warned that he poses an extreme danger to the public.
Reports suggest he may be on the run with hostages, though police have not confirmed this.
Authorities are working to locate Freeman’s partner and two children, but it is unclear whether they are with him.
Chief Commissioner Mike Bush described the attack as the “cold-blooded murder” of two officers. He emphasized that the top priority is to track down and arrest the suspect.
