A manhunt is underway after a 'heavily armed' man shoots and kills two police officers in a rural Australian town: 'Murdered in cold blood'

A major manhunt is underway in Victoria, Australia, after two police officers were shot dead and another seriously injured during an incident in the rural town of Porepunkah on Tuesday, August 26. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is armed, dangerous, and still on the run.

What Happened in Porepunkah

According to Victoria Police, the shooting occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. local time when officers attended a property on Rayner Track. Around 10 police officers were present when gunfire broke out.

A 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable were fatally shot.

A third officer was shot in the lower body and remains in serious condition.

The other seven officers escaped physically unharmed but are reported to be deeply shaken.

Authorities say the officers had been at the property to execute a warrant for historical sex offences when the shooting unfolded.

The Suspect: Armed, Dangerous, and on the Run

Media outlets including the Herald Sun have identified the alleged shooter as Dezi Freeman, a local man in his 50s who has previously described himself as a “sovereign citizen.”

Police say he is “heavily armed” and warned that he poses an extreme danger to the public.

Reports suggest he may be on the run with hostages, though police have not confirmed this.

Authorities are working to locate Freeman’s partner and two children, but it is unclear whether they are with him.

Chief Commissioner Mike Bush described the attack as the “cold-blooded murder” of two officers. He emphasized that the top priority is to track down and arrest the suspect.

Public Safety Warning

Victoria Police have urged residents in Porepunkah and surrounding areas to:

Remain indoors until further notice

Avoid travel into the township

Report any suspicious activity immediately

The small town of Porepunkah lies about 186 miles northeast of Melbourne, close to the popular tourist spot Bright.

National Mourning and Tributes

The tragedy has sparked grief and tributes from across Australia:

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan praised the officers’ courage, writing, “They are the best of us – and the thoughts of all Victorians are with them today.”

Queensland Police Service and New South Wales Police Force both posted messages of condolence and solidarity with Victoria Police.

Bush acknowledged the deep trauma experienced by the surviving officers, saying the entire force is in mourning.

Ongoing Investigation

Police continue to search for Freeman and have deployed significant resources, including armed units, to the area. The situation remains active and dangerous, with updates expected as the search continues.
