Gerald Vandermeer, 57, of Cedar City, Utah, received up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to homicide by assault for fatally stabbing neighbor Cory Whittenburg, 45, during a drunken dispute.
Altercation Background
On February 12, 2025, Vandermeer brought vodka and beer to Whittenburg’s home to resolve a prior argument over barking dogs; both consumed alcohol and THC gummies before an escalating fight Vandermeer claimed not to fully recall. Police found Vandermeer injured outside with facial and hand lacerations; inside a shipping container home, Whittenburg had died from multiple stab wounds, including two to the back.
Plea and Sentencing
Initially charged with first-degree murder, the charge reduced via plea deal. On March 4, 2026, defense highlighted Vandermeer’s trauma, stab wounds, broken ankle, and intoxication delaying aid; prosecutor stressed Whittenburg bled out alone after the violence. Vandermeer must pay $5,800 restitution for funeral costs, with credit for time served.
