Oved Bernardo Mendoza Argueta, 38, a Salvadoran national, received a life sentence plus 20 consecutive years on February 11, 2026, after pleading guilty to murdering one Chick-fil-A employee and aggravated assault on two others in Irving, Texas.
Shooting Details
On June 26, 2024, at 3:50 p.m., Argueta entered the North MacArthur Boulevard Chick-fil-A—where his wife worked—firing in the seating area and kitchen, killing 49-year-old Patricia Portillo and 31-year-old Brayan Godoy at the scene while injuring a third employee. His wife identified him to police; he fled in a silver Honda sedan and was arrested around 2:50 a.m. the next day with an immigration hold placed.
Sentencing and Victims
Dallas DA’s office secured the plea before 203rd District Court Judge Rocky Jones; Argueta waived appeal rights amid victim impact statements, including from Portillo’s daughter. A survivor’s mother voiced fears over workplace safety, questioning if people can work or dine without risk.
Motive and Aftermath
No public motive disclosed by Irving PD, who treated victims as targeted; the location remains closed. DA emphasized accountability for the profound family losses.
