A young boy has been arrested in connection with a deadly mass shooting in Alabama, which killed two people and injured twelve others.

On Friday, Oct. 10, the Montgomery Police Department (MPD) announced on Facebook that the child, who was not identified because he is a minor, is facing several charges in connection with the shooting, which occurred in downtown Montgomery at approximately 11:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 4.

He has been charged with one count of capital murder, which carries a possible life sentence if convicted, according to Alabama Live. The boy has also been charged with nine first-degree assaults and three second-degree assaults.

On October 10, the boy was taken into custody and placed in the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

A video of the arrest, shared by authorities, shows the child in handcuffs while an officer searches his clothing for weapons. Officers then direct the boy, whose face is not shown, into the back seat of a police car.

“Additional arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues,” police said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE. “This progress reflects the swift response, tireless efforts, and professionalism of the Montgomery Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.”

“MPD extends its gratitude to local and federal law enforcement partners for their continued support and collaboration, which have been instrumental in advancing the case,” the detectives said.

According to WSFA 12 News, MPD Chief James Graboys revealed in a press conference on October 4 that at least 14 people were shot, two of whom were found dead at the scene.

Three other people suffered “life-threatening injuries,” while the remaining nine were injured but did not die, Graboys said at the press conference.

The police chief also stated that authorities believed there were at least “two parties involved” and that they were “basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,” according to NBC News.

One of the victims was 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris, according to an MPD news release. He died at the scene and attended McIntyre Comprehensive Academy in Montgomery, according to WFSA-TV and the Montgomery Advisor.

Shalanda Williams, 43, died from her injuries after being transported to a local hospital, according to an MPD news release.

Williams’ cousin, Lewis Bell Jr., told WFSA-TV that she would be remembered as a peacemaker and someone full of compassion.

“The family’s been taking it pretty hard, because she was a great person,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact authorities.
