A disturbing case from California has come to light, where a man is now facing serious charges after human remains were discovered on his property.
What Authorities Found
According to officials, deputies in a rural area near Oroville responded to a 911 call on March 21. Two individuals reported finding what appeared to be a burned human skull along with other skeletal remains at a property in Hurleton.
When officers arrived, they confirmed the presence of human remains and quickly launched an investigation. A search warrant was later executed on the property, where more evidence connected to the case was found.
Who Is Accused
Joseph Dexter Taylor, 52, has been charged with multiple serious crimes, including murder, arson, and weapons-related offenses. Authorities say he was already in custody at the Butte County Jail on a separate warrant when these new charges were filed.
He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bail.
Details of the Investigation
Investigators believe the remains belong to 33-year-old Chris Kidwell, who had reportedly been living on Taylor’s property since late 2025. Official identification is still pending, with DNA testing expected to confirm it.
According to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, evidence suggests that the victim was shot before the body was burned. The investigation also revealed that Taylor allegedly spoke about a “cremation” and had visible burn marks on his legs when he visited others shortly before the remains were discovered.
Ongoing Case and Legal Proceedings
The case is still under investigation, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence. Taylor also reportedly has other pending arson-related cases in a nearby county.
He appeared in court on March 26 and is scheduled for another hearing on April 2, where further developments in the case are expected.
