A serious incident at a grocery store in Florida has now turned into a major legal case, with a family seeking justice after a violent attack left a man with life-changing injuries.
Customer Attack Leads to Lawsuit
A Florida man, Dandrea Johnson, has been charged with felony battery after allegedly attacking another customer at an Aldi store in Lauderdale Lakes.
The victim, Bruce Reese, was reportedly punched near the store exit in October 2025. Months later, his family has filed a lawsuit against Johnson, Aldi, and the store’s security provider, DF Security LLC.
Allegations of Harassment Before Attack
According to the lawsuit, Johnson began verbally harassing Reese inside the store. Reese was shopping with his service dog when the confrontation started.
The situation reportedly escalated over several minutes across different areas of the store. The lawsuit claims that employees and security staff witnessed the argument but did not step in to stop or calm the situation.
Violent Assault Near Store Exit
After leaving the store, Reese was allegedly attacked near the exit. The lawsuit states that Johnson punched him without warning, knocking him unconscious.
Reese fell and suffered a severe head injury, which led to a traumatic brain injury. He was reportedly in a coma for 20 days and has been left with long-term damage affecting his ability to live independently.
Claims of Negligence Against Store and Security
The lawsuit argues that Aldi and its security team failed to act responsibly. It claims:
- Johnson was already known to store management for aggressive behaviour
- The store is located in a high-crime area
- Security measures were not strong enough, with only one unarmed guard present
The family believes proper action could have prevented the attack.
Family Seeks $30 Million in Damages
Reese’s family is now seeking $30 million in damages and has requested a jury trial. Their legal team says the case is also about making sure such incidents are prevented in the future.
As of now, Aldi and DF Security have not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
Criminal Case Still Ongoing
Johnson’s criminal case is still active, and his next court appearance is scheduled for May 8.
