A friend who became paranoid after smoking marijuana is said to have killed a pharmacy student:

The family of a dead Wisconsin pharmacy student is in mourning after authorities say her companion shot and killed her after she smoked marijuana and became paranoid.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WMTV, and Fox 6 Milwaukee, Ariel Spillner was allegedly shot and killed by her friend Jamica Simone Mills on November 4. Mills was then charged with first-degree reckless homicide.

Mills, who was 31 at the time of the shooting, was also charged with a felony for using a dangerous weapon, according to Milwaukee County Jail records obtained by PEOPLE.

Spillner’s family said on a GoFundMe page put up to assist pay for funeral expenses that the Concordia University pharmacy student’s death was “an unimaginable loss.”

“Ariel was a light to everyone who knew her – she had the most giving soul with the biggest heart,” the Spillner family stated. “She genuinely loved her family, her friends, her dogs, and the simple pleasures of life. Ariel was an excellent athlete, a devoted friend, and someone who was always looking for ways to assist others. Her compassion and vitality moved everyone she encountered. She had such a promising future, and it’s tragic that it was taken away from her and us.”

According to court records, first responders discovered Mills lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to her abdomen at 9:40 p.m. on November 4. Meanwhile, Spillner, 26, was discovered unresponsive and pronounced deceased on the spot.

Mills allegedly told authorities that she and Spillner had been friends for a year, according to reports. Spillner allegedly came over to Mills’ house to clip her dogs’ hair before the two ladies smoked marijuana, and Mills claims they both grew paranoid.

Mills claimed police she observed Spillner make a rapid movement with her hand, which led her to assume she was about to be stabbed, prompting her to shoot a handgun she had in her bedroom, according to Fox 6 Milwaukee, which also quoted court documents.

According to reports, Mills told authorities that she had no intention of killing Spillner.

Mills had her bond set at $150,000 and is still in custody, according to county jail records seen by PEOPLE. She is due back in court on November 17.
