A tragic and shocking incident in Florida has left two people dead and sparked an intense search for the suspected gunman, who may have disappeared into the ocean.
Double Shooting Outside Florida Library
Police say 64-year-old Jesse Scott Ellis allegedly shot and killed his wife, Stacie Ellis Mason, and her colleague, Danny Ooley, outside the Indian River County Main Library in Vero Beach.
According to the Vero Beach Police Department, the incident happened in the library parking lot after Mason got into Ooley’s car.
Police Describe It as Targeted Attack
Authorities believe the shooting was not random but a targeted act linked to a personal relationship. Investigators say the suspect may have believed his wife and Ooley were involved in an affair.
Police Chief David Currey described the incident as a “crime of passion,” suggesting it was driven by emotional conflict.
Suspect Allegedly Used Rifle
Officials say Ellis arrived at the scene armed with an AR-15-style rifle and fired multiple shots into the vehicle where the victims were sitting. Both victims died from the attack.
Suspect Walks Into Ocean After Shooting
After the shooting, Ellis reportedly left the scene and was later seen walking into the ocean at South Beach Park while still fully clothed.
A witness alerted authorities, but when responders arrived, they did not realise he was a suspect at the time. He reportedly gave a false name before they left.
Police now believe he may have drowned, but search efforts are still ongoing.
Investigation and Motive
Authorities say the couple’s marriage had been facing problems, and they were possibly in the process of separating. Investigators also mentioned that Ellis had gathered information about the situation before the incident, though details were not fully shared.
Meanwhile, there are conflicting claims about the relationship between Mason and Ooley, with family members denying any affair.
Search and Legal Action
Ellis is currently wanted on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder. If found alive and convicted, he could face the most serious penalties under Florida law.
Police are continuing their search efforts both on land and in the water.
