Jonathan Ross Mata faces murder charges in Houston for fatally shooting Desmond Butler in what police describe as a mistaken identity case on December 25, 2025.
Incident Overview
Around 1 a.m., Butler drove his gray Honda Pilot into a gas station lot on the 9900 block of Bellaire, passing Mata’s black GMC Acadia; Mata’s wife chased the vehicle believing their daughter was inside. Mata fired shots as Butler tried to leave, striking him and causing a crash into a pole; Butler died at a hospital.
Investigation and Arrest
Mata confessed three weeks later at HPD headquarters, stating he fired twice to stop the car after a call about his daughter’s assault but didn’t realize he hit Butler and left out of fear. He turned himself in on January 14, was released on $50,000 bond, and is set for court on February 25; he and Butler were strangers.
Victim’s Background
Desmond Butler, 25, had relocated from Georgia to Houston in 2023 for an Amazon manager job. His sister Destiny described him as a “light of joy,” with the family devastated and seeking answers while preserving his memory.
