A Utah family is heartbroken after their 8-month-old baby was tragically killed in a mass shooting during the West Fest Carnival in West Valley City. The shooting took place at the WestFest, an annual arts and culture festival in Utah. Anderson Jr. was with his family to celebrate Father’s Day when the unexpected violence erupted. The Garcias described Sunday night, which was meant to be a joyful celebration, as turning into “the most heartbreaking night of our lives” when their baby was killed in the crossfire. Anderson Jr. was one of two twin boys, with the other child seemingly unharmed in the incident.
The Loss of Innocent Lives
As of Tuesday, the Garcias had raised over $46,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral costs. The family expressed their wish to take Anderson Jr.’s body to Guatemala, where they hope he can rest in peace surrounded by family and loved ones. Anderson Sr. shared how happy and unique his son was, saying, “I’ve never seen one like him.”
In addition to the infant’s death, two other people—a 41-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man—were also killed in the shooting. Two others were injured. Police explained that the shooting occurred after officers tried to intervene in an argument between two groups. The 16-year-old boy suspected of pulling out a gun and opening fire was arrested. Authorities confirmed that the 18-year-old victim was likely the intended target of the suspect’s violence.

During the gunfire exchange, police officers also fired their weapons. However, the police clarified that the suspect was not hit by any of the officers’ shots.
