A 28-year-old woman is charged with the death of her infant, who was found headfirst in a trash can.

Jaley Bush, a 28-year-old from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, faces child endangerment resulting in death after her infant son was found unresponsive, headfirst in a trash can, on January 27, 2025, in a Keokuk apartment basement.

Bush had been visiting a friend, took Klonopin—a benzodiazepine—and fell asleep with the baby beside her; she awoke to discover him in the trash can, where he had allegedly crawled over her. Despite life-saving efforts, the child died on February 5 from asphyxiation, per autopsy, with Bush’s blood later testing positive for methamphetamine and benzodiazepines.

Charged on November 21 nearly nine months later, Bush is due in Lee County court, as the complaint alleges she failed to provide minimum supervision for her infant’s safety. Authorities emphasize this tragic outcome stemmed from neglect amid substance use, highlighting risks of impaired caregiving.
