Two months after 13-year-old Jakob Bowerman, a Wisconsin teenager with autism, drowned after being allegedly thrown off Marinette’s Government Pier, prosecutors announced that 16-year-old Peyton Carnot will be charged as an adult for his role in the incident.
Jakob died days after the August 20 event where he was apparently thrown into choppy waters by Carnot and 21-year-old Tylor Birch, who was earlier arrested and charged with second-degree reckless homicide. Initially, both men told police they jumped in to help Jakob after he expressed he could not swim, but later investigations revealed they actually threw him into the water despite his protests.
Both Birch and Carnot face second-degree reckless homicide charges. Birch remains in Marinette County Jail, with a competency hearing scheduled for December 18. Carnot is held at Washington County Juvenile Detention, with bond set at $100,000, and his arraignment scheduled for December 17.
Jakob’s mother noted her son barely knew Carnot and did not know Birch. The autopsy confirmed drowning as the cause of death.
