First responders from across the country will gather in North Charleston this Saturday, June 21, to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the September 11, 2001, attacks. The Charleston Memorial Stair Climb, an annual event, will see over 400 climbers take on the stairs inside the North Charleston Coliseum to pay tribute to the 412 first responders who lost their lives that day.
Climbing for a Cause
Each participant will climb 110 flights of stairs, representing the number of flights in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. This symbolic act serves as a powerful tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the first responders who rushed into the buildings to save lives.
The event, which has sold out in previous years, is expected to draw over 500 attendees this year, including climbers, spectators, and volunteers. Organizers note that the climb not only honors the fallen heroes of 9/11 but also raises funds for causes directly related to first responders, including families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty.
Supporting First Responders and Their Families
In addition to the climb, the event aims to raise funds for first responder-related causes. These funds may be allocated to families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty or to nonprofit organizations that support first responders. By participating, attendees help support those who continue to serve and protect communities across the nation.
