A tragic shooting in Henderson, North Carolina, left two victims dead after a violent dispute over garbage cans. Authorities say Michael Sharron Wright, a convicted murderer, shot and killed 63-year-old Teresa Davis and her 26-year-old son Joseph Jeffreys Jr. following a confrontation about trash. The incident unfolded on Sunday evening, leaving the community in shock.
The Shooting Incident
On Sunday evening, around 6:45 p.m., police responded to a shooting on Maple Street in Henderson, about 40 miles northeast of Raleigh. When officers arrived, they found Davis and Jeffreys suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts from medical personnel, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to police, the suspect was identified as 41-year-old Michael Sharron Wright. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Wright, charging him with two counts of murder. Although police did not provide many details about the incident, interviews with family and friends revealed more about the tragic events that led to the shooting.
Dispute Over Garbage Leads to Tragedy
Wright and Davis were neighbors, and the dispute reportedly started when Jeffreys went to confront Wright about some garbage cans that had been thrown into Davis’ yard. According to reports, Wright allegedly used Jeffreys’ own gun to shoot both victims during the confrontation.
Tennisha Eaton, a friend of Davis, spoke to local news about the senseless nature of the killings. “It was over trash, over some freakin’ trash,” Eaton said. “This woman is gone. This boy is gone, over some trash.”
Eaton also described the heartbreaking scene in which Jeffreys’ three children were in the car and witnessed the deaths of their father and grandmother. “That’s so heartbreaking for the grandkids to be in the car, his kids to see their daddy and their grandmother get killed,” she said. “That’s senseless.”
Wright’s Criminal History
The shooting was not Wright’s first violent crime. Records show that Wright was released from prison in January 2024 after serving time for the 2010 murder of his 54-year-old uncle, Kirk Douglas Wright Sr. Michael Wright had been convicted of second-degree murder for the killing, which occurred when he was 26 years old. His uncle’s body was found in a shallow grave in the backyard, and Wright was sentenced to about 14 years in prison before his release earlier this year.
Wright Surrenders to Authorities
After the shooting, Wright was considered armed and dangerous by law enforcement. However, in an unexpected turn, Wright contacted Granville County Sheriff Robert Fountain early Monday morning, stating that he would surrender, but only to Fountain.
Sheriff Fountain explained that he received a call from Wright around 8 a.m. on Monday, telling him to head toward Louisburg and that he would provide further instructions. Wright eventually met with Fountain in the parking lot of a local restaurant, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Legal Proceedings
Michael Sharron Wright is currently being held at the Granville County Detention Center without bond. He faces two charges of murder in connection with the shooting deaths of Teresa Davis and Joseph Jeffreys Jr. The community remains in shock, as they try to come to terms with the tragic and senseless loss of life.
