A Virginia family is grieving after a 16-year-old boy was allegedly killed by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run crash while walking home from Arby’s.
The victim, Joshua Driver, was described by his family as autistic and mentally disabled. The tragic incident happened in Henrico County along West Broad Street late Friday night.
Police say 41-year-old John Daniel Bruehl was driving under the influence when he struck Joshua and left the scene.
Teen Was Walking Home After Missing Bus
According to Joshua’s mother, Sharon Driver, the teenager had gone to Arby’s with his brother. The two usually took a bus home, but Joshua reportedly missed the last bus and had to walk back alone.
His mother said Joshua normally wore a reflective safety vest given to him by a bus operator, especially when walking at night. However, the vest had been washed the day before and was still drying at home.
She believes Joshua was walking back home when the crash happened.
Driver Accused of Leaving Scene
Authorities said Joshua’s body was discovered about three hours later in a grassy area along the side of the road.
Police accused Bruehl of hitting the teenager and fleeing instead of stopping to help.
Joshua’s mother said she could not understand how someone could leave after hitting her son. She described the accused driver as heartless and said the pain of losing Joshua has been overwhelming.
Family Says Victim Had a Gentle Nature
A GoFundMe created for the family described Joshua as a caring boy who may not have understood everything around him but was still aware of what was happening.
His mother said one of the hardest parts has been not knowing whether Joshua suffered after the crash or died instantly.
She also expressed heartbreak that her son never had the chance to grow into adulthood.
Suspect Faces DUI and Hit-and-Run Charges
John Daniel Bruehl has been charged with DUI and hit-and-run in connection with the crash.
Arrest records reportedly show this is his second alleged DUI offense within the last several years.
Joshua’s mother used the tragedy to warn others about the dangers of drunk driving, saying impaired driving destroys lives and families.
