In late 2024, a 3-year-old girl from Ohio tragically lost her life after being mauled by her father’s dogs. Her father, Warren Houston, has now been sentenced to spend at least five years in prison for the heartbreaking incident.
Father Sentenced for Daughter’s Death
On Friday, May 22, Judge Virginia Tallent of the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas found Houston guilty of involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, and endangering children. The sentencing comes after the December 2024 death of his daughter, Kingsley Wright, according to Ohio news outlets FOX19 and WKRC.
Houston was handed a prison term of five to seven and a half years. After serving his time, he will also face two to five years of probation, FOX19 reported.
The Fatal Attack
Kingsley died on December 27, 2024, while visiting her father’s apartment in Cincinnati. Prosecutors said Houston and his girlfriend were asleep as his two pit bull terriers attacked the toddler for nearly 30 minutes. The young girl died from a dislocated neck and blood loss, according to FOX19.
Houston reportedly kept the dogs in a cage with a broken latch, fully aware that at least one of them was dangerous. Prosecutors argued that allowing Kingsley to sleep in the same room as the dogs showed a reckless disregard for her safety.
Judge Tallent agreed, stating in court that there was a “known risk” due to the unsafe conditions. “You failed at that time to take any reasonable step to ensure her safety,” the judge said. “The harm that was caused in this case is catastrophic and irreversible,” she added.
Reckless Actions Over Time
According to FOX19, the judge highlighted that the incident “was not a momentary lapse in judgment.” She noted that the dangerous conditions existed for some time and eventually led to a tragic, irreversible death.
Houston’s lawyer described the mauling as a tragic accident.
Family Speaks Out
During the sentencing, Kingsley’s mother, Gina Smith, shared a statement read by Assistant Prosecutor Elyse Deters. She wrote, “Kingsley was abruptly and violently taken away due to Warren Houston’s recklessness, carelessness, and glaring indifference towards Kingsley’s safety and well-being. Every morning is the beginning of a new nightmare for me.”
Smith continued, “I see no light at the end of my dark and seemingly infinite tunnel. All I see now is a meaningless existence, without purpose, where there once was purpose, Kingsley.”
Remembering Kingsley
In her obituary, Kingsley was described as “a happy girl with a beautiful laugh and smile.” She loved to sing and dance for her family and always looked for the bright side in everything around her.
The loss of such a young life has left a lasting impact on her family and community, serving as a tragic reminder of the dangers of neglecting safety with pets.
