Actress and South Carolina native Andie MacDowell recently opened up to The New York Times about her life at her Kiawah Island home and her love for the Lowcountry. The Golden Globe-winning actress, known for movies like Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral, bought the five-bedroom property two years ago, a few months after turning 65.
The house offers plenty of privacy, with views of a pond and the surrounding maritime forest. MacDowell often visited Kiawah before buying her home and has made it her quiet retreat after years in the public eye. She previously mentioned her move to coastal South Carolina during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show.
Andie MacDowell’s Cozy Kiawah Island Home
When MacDowell moved in, the home came furnished. She gave some pieces to her son and added a mix of inexpensive furniture with a few special items from her past residences. Over the last two years, she has updated parts of the house.
The kitchen mostly stayed the same, but she painted the floors in a white-and-sandy-brown pattern. A sitting room now has tree-pattern wallpaper on built-in shelves for a nature-inspired vibe. The biggest update was the sunroom, where she enjoys puzzles, reading, and champagne. She added French doors and lowered a window to bring in more light.
Although the exact Charleston-area address wasn’t shared, People reported that MacDowell sold her 7,024-square-foot Los Angeles home in September 2023 for $3.9 million. Her LA house had five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and classic 1920s craftsmanship.

New Emergency Services Headquarters in North Charleston
Charleston County has started construction on a new 130,000-square-foot emergency medical services (EMS) headquarters at 4370 Azalea Drive. The facility will combine operations, training, vehicle storage, and administrative offices under one roof. The groundbreaking was held on May 14.
Luxury Homes Coming to Kiawah River
Kiawah River, a waterfront community on Johns Island, has added three builders to its “Builders Guild.” Riverland Builders will build two custom homes and one speculative home. Fox Creek Homes is creating two luxury homes ranging from 3,100 to 3,600 square feet.
MHA Construction is working on semi-custom and historic renovation projects. New homes at Kiawah River start at $1.5 million, with homesites beginning at $250,000. Only half of the 2,000-acre property will be developed, keeping the rest as green space.
Andie MacDowell’s move to Kiawah Island reflects a trend of celebrities seeking peace and privacy in South Carolina’s coastal communities. Meanwhile, Charleston continues to grow with luxury homes, historic condo sales, and new public facilities shaping the city’s landscape.
