Juan Manuel Yanez, 49, was sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting his girlfriend, Victoria Valadez, 43, in her San Marcos apartment. He is eligible for parole after 30 years.
Details of the Crime
On February 7, 2025, Yanez called 911 reporting he had just shot his “wife.” Police traced the call to Valadez’s apartment on River Road. She was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. There were no signs of a struggle, indicating she was likely shot while asleep.
Flight and Evidence
After the shooting, Yanez bought four beers at a nearby 7-Eleven before calling 911. He then drove more than 150 miles to Houston, where he lived with another family. Investigators recovered surveillance footage, Valadez’s blood on Yanez’s clothing and jewelry, and his wallet left at the apartment. The murder weapon was never recovered, and he had removed his phone’s SIM card to avoid tracking.
Legal Proceedings
Yanez pleaded guilty to murder earlier this month. Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Jon English and Abigail Whitaker prosecuted the case. Judge Pool imposed a life sentence, reflecting the severity of the crime.
Statements from Prosecutors
English emphasized the impact on the community and family, while Whitaker praised the victim’s family for their courage throughout the case and sentencing process.
