A 26‑year‑old man was killed and another person was injured after a shooting broke out at a popular pizza shop in Wilmington, California, authorities say. The victim, identified as Andres Castellas, was celebrating his birthday when he tried to intervene in a fight and was shot.
Shooting During Birthday Celebration
Castellas was at Red West Pizza on Saturday with family and friends, marking his 26th birthday, when two women began arguing inside the restaurant, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). When Castellas stepped in to stop the fight, a man opened fire, police said.
Castellas was struck and died at the scene. A restaurant employee in their 20s was also shot and taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life‑threatening.
Suspect Still at Large
Police say the shooter fled the scene immediately after firing. He is described as a Hispanic man between 20 and 25 years old and remained at large as of the latest reports. Authorities are actively investigating and seeking tips from the public.
Community Reacts to Tragedy
A GoFundMe set up for Castellas’ family said he was “surrounded by love and happiness” before the tragedy and emphasized that he was innocent. Family and supporters have expressed deep grief over the loss of a father whose life was taken in a moment meant to be joyful.
Local residents told news outlets they were shaken by the shooting at a restaurant they consider a community gathering spot, especially one frequented by children and families.
What Police Are Saying
The LAPD has not yet released further details on a possible motive, and no arrests have been reported. Authorities continue to search for the suspect and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
This incident highlights once again how quickly a peaceful moment can turn tragic when violence erupts in a public place.
