BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – An 18-year-old student was arrested Wednesday morning after authorities said he brought a loaded gun onto a school bus headed to Blythewood High School.
Student Alerted Authorities Through 911 Text
According to officials, around 8:45 a.m., 911 Communications received a text message from a student riding the school bus. The student reported that another student, later identified as 18-year-old Kelvin Figueroa, was carrying a firearm.
School Resource Officers and Richland County deputies quickly responded and intercepted the bus as it arrived at Blythewood High School.
Loaded Gun Found in Student’s Bag
Authorities said deputies immediately detained Figueroa and searched his belongings. During the search, they reportedly found a loaded pistol inside his bag.
Sheriff Leon Lott praised the student who reported the incident, saying their quick action may have prevented a dangerous situation.
“I want to recognize the student who texted 911,” Lott said. “That took courage, and it made a difference. Because of that student, we were able to intervene immediately and prevent a potentially dangerous situation.”
Charges Filed
Figueroa has been charged with carrying a weapon on school property. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Authorities have not released additional details about the investigation at this time.
