Michael Lanunziata, a 38-year-old man from Arizona, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the second-degree murder of his roommate, Joseph Lephiew, at a group home in Phoenix. The sentencing follows a trial in which Lanunziata was found guilty of fatally shooting Lephiew in January 2024.
Details of the Incident
On January 25, 2024, police responded to a report of a shooting at a transitional living home in Phoenix, where Lanunziata and Lephiew, along with five other men, lived. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Lephiew’s body on a staircase inside the home. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Lanunziata, who had jumped out of a window and climbed to the roof of the building, spoke with officers from his elevated position. Officers later discovered Lanunziata’s handgun and several shell casings near Lephiew’s body. Witnesses, including other residents of the group home, told police that the two men had been arguing before the gunshots rang out.
Lanunziata’s Self-Defense Claim
Initially, Lanunziata claimed that he shot Lephiew in self-defense, telling police that Lephiew, who was unarmed, “came at him.” However, his story was inconsistent, and Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated that evidence at the scene proved the shooting was not justified. Mitchell described the murder as a “deadly and unjustified act of violence inside a place where people should have felt safe.”
History of Self-Defense Claims
This was not the first time Lanunziata had claimed self-defense in relation to a deadly shooting. According to prosecutors, Lanunziata made a similar claim in 2016 when he shot and killed another housemate, Lamar Reid Jr., in Henderson, Nevada. Although prosecutors dropped the charges in that case, Lanunziata’s history of self-defense claims raised questions about his intentions.
Sentencing
Lanunziata was sentenced to 20 years in prison following his conviction. The case has drawn attention due to the violent act taking place in a group home, a place intended to offer support and safety to its residents.
The community and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office have expressed their commitment to ensuring justice for victims of senseless violence.
