A Delaware man has been indicted on murder charges after allegedly fatally assaulting his 72-year-old grandmother in a hotel room earlier this year. On May 1, the Delaware State Police announced that 30-year-old Dempsey Fritchey had been formally indicted for the murder of Elizabeth Fritchey, who succumbed to her injuries in February.
The Incident
The tragic event unfolded on January 29, 2026, when Delaware State Police were called to the Hyatt House hotel in Lewes around 5:45 p.m. Fritchey, who had allegedly told hotel staff that he could have killed his grandmother, was found near the lobby. According to police reports, Fritchey admitted to troopers that he “may have killed his grandmother” before being detained without incident.
Upon entering the hotel room, authorities found Elizabeth Fritchey unconscious with severe injuries to her face and head. It was later determined that Dempsey Fritchey had physically assaulted his grandmother using his hands and feet. After the attack, Fritchey reportedly went to the hotel lobby to inform the staff about the assault.
Grandmother’s Death and Indictment
Elizabeth Fritchey was immediately transported to a hospital, where she remained in critical condition before passing away 12 days later on February 10, 2026. Initially, Dempsey Fritchey was arrested on charges of first-degree assault. However, following his grandmother’s death, the charges were upgraded, and a Sussex County Grand Jury indicted him for first-degree murder on April 13, 2026.
Current Status
Dempsey Fritchey is currently in the custody of the Delaware Department of Correction as he awaits further legal proceedings. The murder indictment marks a significant development in the case, as authorities work to bring justice for the victim.
The case has left the community in shock, and more details regarding the motive behind the attack are expected to emerge as the legal process continues.
