A busy stretch of Interstate 85 in Spartanburg County saw major disruption on Thursday morning after a crash involving a large vehicle. The incident led to lane closures and long traffic jams, affecting many drivers travelling through the area. Officials quickly responded to manage the situation and check for any structural damage.
Crash reported on I-85 South
The accident took place on I-85 South in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), the crash happened near exit 68, which connects to SC 129 in the Wellford area.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that the crash involved a box truck. Reports suggest that the truck hit an overpass while travelling on the interstate, leading to the incident.
Injuries reported but not serious
Authorities stated that some people were injured in the crash. However, the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and those affected are expected to recover.
Emergency teams responded quickly to the scene, ensuring that the injured received medical attention and that the situation was brought under control.
Lane closures caused heavy traffic
Due to the crash, officials had to close the two left lanes on I-85 South. The lane closures remained in place for around two hours, from approximately 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This caused heavy traffic congestion in the area, with vehicles backed up for several miles. Many drivers experienced delays as traffic moved slowly through the remaining open lanes.
Such incidents highlight how even a single accident on a busy highway can lead to major travel disruptions.
Bridge inspected after impact
After the crash, SCDOT sent bridge inspection teams to check the overpass that was hit by the box truck. This step is important to ensure the safety of the structure before allowing normal traffic flow.
Fortunately, officials reported that there was no major damage to the bridge. This meant that there was no need for long-term closures or repairs, and traffic could return to normal once the scene was cleared.
Situation now under control
Once the damaged vehicle was removed and inspections were completed, the closed lanes were reopened. Traffic gradually started moving again, and conditions improved in the area.
Authorities continue to remind drivers to stay alert, especially when driving near large trucks or construction structures like bridges and overpasses.
