What Happened in Lubbock
According to the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, 78-year-old Michael Vernie Owens has been arrested and charged with murder after allegedly shooting his 37-year-old son, Michael Joseph Owens.
The incident took place on April 23 at a home on 126th Street in Lubbock, Texas. Around 7:20 p.m., authorities received a 911 call — reportedly made by the father himself — stating that he had shot his son.
Scene of the Incident
When deputies arrived at the house, they found the younger Owens with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. According to reports cited by KCBD, the victim was already dead at the scene.
The father approached officers and identified himself, cooperating with authorities as they began their investigation.
Father’s Statement to Police
Michael Vernie Owens told investigators that there had been ongoing problems between him and his son. He claimed that:
- His son had been taking money from his bank account for months
- There had been past threats and alleged physical assaults
- The threats had become frequent over time
He also said that none of these earlier incidents were officially reported to the police.
Events Leading to the Shooting
On the day of the incident, the father said he had gone to open a new bank account to protect his money. When he returned home, he claimed his son confronted him near an RV on the property.
According to his statement, his son allegedly threatened him again and made a move towards him. At that moment, the father used a gun and shot him.
He later told investigators, “I think I snapped,” suggesting he acted under extreme stress or frustration.
Legal Status
Michael Vernie Owens is now facing a charge of murder. He is currently being held at the Lubbock County Detention Center with a bond set at $250,000.
